Munich. It was the path leading to a new segment, and it became an unrivalled path of success. Five years after the presentation of the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the 500 000th BMW X3 is leaving the assembly line. The production anniversary marks a further milestone in the triumphant international success story of the agile all-wheel model. Thanks to its agile handling characteristics, the BMW X3 has not only set a trend but has also set benchmarks. Its remarkable popularity is reflected in numerous awards and an outstanding position in the market conquered by the BMW X3 as the only premium vehicle in its class to date. The anniversary vehicle, which leaves the factory owned by the BMW Group's production associate Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, on 18th June 2008, will be donated by the BMW Group to earthquake victims in the Chinese province of Sichuan. In September, it is to be auctioned off following the Destination X Tour 2008 in China.
All proceeds will go to the China Charity Organisation and the BMW Warm Heart Fund. Its outstanding agility and exemplary efficiency underline the continuing market success of the BMW X3, following its launch five years ago. With the second BMW X model, the dynamic handling characteristics that had previously already rendered the BMW X5 an excellent performer had now also been introduced to the compact all-wheel vehicle segment. The successful expansion of the model range confirms BMW’s concept of substantiating the driving dynamics-oriented SAV category in the market environment of off-road vehicles. To this date, more than 1.25 million BMW X models have been sold worldwide.

The BMW X3 owes its unique combination of sporty handling performance on the road and superior traction on non-tarmac surfaces to the intelligent all-wheel technology BMW xDrive. The BMW X3 was the first model to be equipped with electronically controlled variable power distribution between the front and rear wheels. Meanwhile however, all four-wheel drive BMW models feature xDrive. And the BMW X family has now been further augmented by the exceptionally dynamic Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6. The successful SAV concept and the advanced drive technology have both ensured that BMW is today’s most successful builder of all-terrain vehicles in the premium segment.
In addition to superior technology and premium quality, the BMW X3 excels through an even balance between driving fun and fuel consumption unrivalled in its segment, the front runner in terms of efficiency being above all the BMW X3 2.0d. Its 130 kW/177 bhp four-cylinder diesel power unit featuring an all-aluminium crankcase and state-of-the-art Common Rail direct fuel injection is concerted with an array of BMW EfficientDynamics measures. The BMW X3 2.0d offers impressive pulling power with an average fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100 km as determined in an EU test cycle.

Due to its multifaceted qualities, the BMW X3 has earned itself a number of high-calibre awards. Twice in succession, in 2006 and 2007, readers of Europe’s most widely sold all-terrain car magazine “Auto Bild Alles Allrad” voted this SAV model “All-wheel Car of the Year”. Also, during the same years the BMW X3 won a reader survey conducted by the car magazine “Off Road” way ahead of its competitors, each time seizing the title “Sports Utility Vehicle of the Year”. Moreover, the intelligent all-wheel system xDrive was awarded the Innovation Prize 2007 by the Deutscher Allrad Verband (DAV).
In addition, this year the BMW X3 was awarded the prize “Gelber Engel” by the world’s largest automobile club ADAC in the category “quality” for being the most reliable vehicle on Germany’s roads. Furthermore, market research experts from EurotaxSchwacke put the BMW X3 in first place in the 2008 “Automobile Forecast Index” in the off-road vehicle category. By doing so, they confirmed that the SAV model had the lowest depreciation in this segment. 500 000 BMW X3s – a milestone in a global success story. From the very beginning, the market success of the BMW X3 was a global phenomenon. In the year 2007 alone, more than 110,000 units were sold worldwide. International demand also resulted in the production capacity in Graz, Austria, being augmented by a so-called “completely knocked down assembly” at three locations outside the European Union. In this way, markets in which the import of fully assembled vehicles is impeded due for example to customs regulations, have access to models that are appealing.
Therefore, the BMW X3 is built within the framework of the CKD assembly scheme at the locations Cairo (Egypt), Kaliningrad (Russia) and Rayong (Thailand). Moreover, depending on the market environment, there is a choice of different engine variants. In Europe, three versions of both the petrol and the diesel engine are currently available for the BMW X3. The performance spectrum ranges from 110 kW/150 bhp for the BMW X3 2.0i with a four-cylinder petrol engine to 210 kW/286 bhp for the BMW X3 3.0sd powered by a straight sixcylinder oil burner with Variable Twin Turbo.
The 500 000th BMW X3 has a straight six-cylinder petrol engine with a composite magnesium-aluminium crankcase and variable VALVETRONIC valve management under the bonnet. The BMW X3 3.0si featuring this drivetrain develops an output of 200 kW/272 bhp. With its individualistic ruby red metallic body colour, the anniversary vehicle is also unique to the Chinese car market. This is a further reason why the BMW Group can hope to obtain the highest possible price when the anniversary car is auctioned off. The auction for the China Charity Organisation will conclude the Destination X Tour 2008. At this outdoor adventure event held annually by the BMW Group, participants complete a particularly demanding rally on Chinese highways and on nontarmac roads where the BMW X3 can really show what it is made of.
Aid for earthquake victims: BMW Group assumes social responsibility.
A day after the disastrous earthquake in May, BMW China and BMW Brilliance had donated 1 million CNY (around 93,000 Euros) and three BMW X3 cars as immediate aid. Together with the China Charity Foundation, the BMW Group instituted the BMW Warm Heart Fund, donating a further 10 million CNY (around 930,000 Euros) in response to the far-reaching consequences of the earthquake. In donating the 500 000th BMW X3, the company is increasing its commitment in support of the earthquake victims and emphasising its willingness to assume social responsibility and to live up to its role as a “corporate citizen”.

(Monday, 16 June), the FCX Clarity – Honda’s advanced hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle – came off the line at the world’s first dedicated fuel cell vehicle manufacturing facility in Japan. After 19 years of development, the arrival of this ‘real world’ fuel cell car marks the beginning of a new era of cleaner motoring.
The FCX Clarity – which emits only water from its exhaust pipe – was presented at a line-off ceremony at the Honda Automobile New Model Centre in Tochigi Prefecture, where Honda also showcased a number of the new production processes. Among the early adopters are the actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her filmmaker husband Christopher Guest, and film producer Ron Yerxa.
A new dedicated fuel cell vehicle assembly line has been established at the Honda Automobile New Model Center, which includes processes unique to a fuel cell vehicle such as the installation of the fuel cell stack and hydrogen tank. Honda Engineering Co., Ltd produces all fuel cell stacks itself, also in Tochigi. In manufacturing fuel cells, exclusively-designed automated equipment was introduced to ensure quality of the highest precision while enabling mass production of cells, with several hundred cells required for each fuel cell stack. Through these initiatives, Honda is making steady progress in the area of fuel cell vehicle production, in addition to fuel cell and fuel cell vehicle technologies, thereby moving closer to realising its goal to enable more widespread use of fuel cell vehicles.
The FCX Clarity was designed from scratch as a dedicated fuel cell vehicle. It is powered by the highly compact, efficient and powerful Honda V Flow fuel cell stack. Boasting a low-slung, dynamic and sophisticated appearance made possible by the innovative layout of the fuel cell power plant, the FCX Clarity offers superior design and driving performance as well as environmental responsibility. Lease sales are scheduled to begin in July in the U.S. and this fall in Japan. The combined sales plan for Japan and the U.S. calls for a few dozen units within a year and about 200 units within three years. Additionally, the FCX Clarity will be exhibited at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit to begin July 7, as one of a group of advanced environmental technologies.

The pre-compressed charge air is cooled down in a highly efficient dual-flow water-to-air intercooler system that is mounted above the engine. This measure optimizes power yield, throttle response and also ensures the engine’s thermal health. Specially developed mapping for engine electronics and SMG gearbox controls coordinate the perfect interaction of all new components.
The supercharged M6 V10 engine produces its maximum power output of 635 hp / 467 kW at 7,300. The high efficiency rate of the two ASA superchargers, each spinning at up to 100,000 rpm and more, results in a torque diagram that rises early and at 3,600 rpm already surpasses the production engine’s peak torque of 520 Nm, delivered at 6,100 rpm. The new peak of 635 Nm is reached at 6,300 rpm. This special characteristic is, apart from the outstanding reliability and long life qualities, the reason why ALPINA features the ASA superchargers in their models B5, B6 and B7, as well.
Acceleration performance benefits from the perfect performance characteristic accordingly. With a sprint time from rest to 100 km/h of 4.6 seconds and to 200 km/h in 11,9 seconds the 2-ton convertible accelerates like a true sports car. The 300-km/h barrier is shattered after 34,5 seconds from standstill. Contrary to the production car the G-POWER HURRICANE is not limited electronically to a top speed of 250 km/h but to 320 km/h. The determining factors therefore are weight, tyres and most important the soft top of the M6 convertible.
The enormous performance places extreme demands on aerodynamics, tires, suspension and brakes.
The G-POWER front apron, upon request also available made from especially light carbon fiber, replaces the production part in its entirety. Its large air inlets provide optimal supply of cooling air for all radiators and front brakes. At the same time the spoiler minimizes lift on the front axle at high speeds. The G-POWER rocker panels smooth the airflow between the wheel houses and give the M6 a longer, lower and sleeker appearance. Lift on the rear axle is reduced by the carbon-fiber rear diffuser for the G-POWER rear apron.
Even better driving dynamics and more exclusive looks are the hallmark of the G-POWER Silverstone 21-inch light-alloy wheels that fill out the space beneath the wheel arches perfectly. The drop-center rims have brilliant-graphite coated centers while the outer rim wells and spokes are polished. They are mounted in sizes 9.5 J x 21 with size 255/30 ZR 21 tires in front and size 10.5 J x 21 wheels with size 295/25 ZR 21 tires on the rear axle. Technology partner Dunlop provides the perfect high-speed tires.
The large wheels make room for the G-POWER high-performance brake system with eight-piston fixed calipers and 380 x 34 millimeter brake discs on the front axle. The M6 handling can be made even sportier by installing the height-adjustable G-POWER coil-over suspension RS with nine selectable settings each for bound and rebound.
The G-POWER M6 HURRICANE convertible is available as a fully converted car starting at 183,000 Euros. Any existing M6 – sedan and wagon – can also be upgraded with the G-POWER twin-compressor system along with numerous items from the extensive G-POWER tuning accessories lineup. For M6 coupé drivers only is the 730 hp version of the G-POWER BI-Kompressor system available, as well.

The base vehicle which is impressive due to its sheer size becomes captivating with its extraordinary sporty look. Meanwhile enhanced performance of the Range Rover compressor motor contributes to the sporty driving performance.
Superior performance
Arden obtains not less than 520 HP from the from the supercharged V8, its cubic capacity having been raised to 4.5 litres and a high performance twin screw supercharger was added. Together with the torque which has been increased to an ample 680 Nm, this provides the not exactly light Range Rover with an appealing driving performance. The sheer power catapults the British SUV from nought to one hundred km/h in 6.5 seconds. Outstanding engine power goes without saying. Even if speeds beyond 200 km/h do not happen often due to the flow of traffic, the Arden AR7’s 480 HP make over 240 km/h possible.
Arden bodykit: better look, better driving behavior
Arden adapted its aerodynamic components to the Range Rover’s basic design in a masterly fashion. As usual with Arden, the kit looks as though it fits seamlessly. The completely re-designed, in total 6 cm wider front apron, which replaces the production part, features a hand-made stainless steel grill and air vents. These features emphasize not only the dynamic and powerful appearance, they also provide more effective air supply to the cooling units behind. Arden has made substantial improvements to the aerodynamics, effectively reducing lift to the front axle; this has a lasting benefit on handling performance at higher speeds. The LED daytime running lights deserve special attention. They comply with the future European standards and are harmoniously integrated right and left above the large air intakes. To complete the powerful appearance, Arden also enhances the Range Rover with wheel arch extensions, side skirts and a newly developed rear apron, which like the front apron features several grill inserts.
With regards to harmoniously designing the rear area, Arden adapted the design of the exhaust tail pipes of the stainless steel sport exhaust system, which was exclusively hand-made for the new AR7, perfectly to the design of the rear apron. The system which produces a marvellous resonant sound ends in rectangular tailpipes, with its openings characterized by a horizontal center bar, so that they do not appear too overpowering and meet Arden’s standards for understatement.
“Bigfoot”
The “Sportline” wheels have a large share in the appearance of the Arden AR7. Arden offers the three-part forged wheel in 22” or 23”. The increased size compared with the production Range Rover clearly improves the handling of the SUV and gives the driver more driving pleasure.
Whoever decides on enhanced power should also think of suitable braking performance. So that the Arden AR7 comes to a standstill as quickly as it accelerates, Arden incorporates at the front a 6-piston and at the rear a 4-piston braking system which distributes its power emphatically on the internally ventilated and perforated brake disks.
Elegant interior
The interior does not come off badly with Arden either. In the in-house saddlery all of the interior work is carried out to the highest precision and converted into the customer’s requirements with great attention to detail. Leather and alcantara are made to measure in any colour desired, a wide variety of high-grade woods are processed and also chrome, carbon and aluminium applications are made for customers.
