A small landmark of New York City architectural and automotive history disappeared recently, almost without notice. The theatrical auto showroom designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at 430 Park Avenue, at 56th Street, had displayed a number of European brands over the years, notably Mercedes-Benz from 1957 to 2012.

The space, with a spiral ramp and turntable interior, was designed in 1954 for the pioneering auto importer Max Hoffman.
In early April, the Wright interior was demolished by the owners of the building, Midwood Investment and Management and Oestreicher Properties. Debra Pickrel, a preservationist and co-author of “Frank Lloyd Wright in New York: The Plaza Years, 1954-1959” (Gibbs Smith, 2007) wrote about the showroom’s destruction in Metropolis magazine.
Born in Austria, Maximilian Hoffman immigrated to New York with the outbreak of World War II. In 1947, he established a firm to import little-known European brands to New York and the West Coast.
Hoffman first intended the showroom for Jaguars. Drawings from the Wright archives show a leaping Jaguar sculpture and planters. But by the time the showroom was completed, Jaguar had set up its own sales space. Instead, the Hoffman space was filled with a mix of cars, including Porsches, for which he was the official importer to the United States.
The first drawings for the showroom have pedestrians on Park Avenue looking into the space. A rotating turntable held three or four cars; a ramp behind it accommodated one or two more. That spiral anticipated the design of the Guggenheim Museum, which opened in 1959.
The showroom was never considered a major work. In 1966, the architecture critic of The New York Times, Ada Louise Huxtable, who died in January, referred to it as “cramped.”
But it was one of a handful of Wright buildings in the New York area, and its form has a definite place in key themes of Wright’s work, according to historians like David G. DeLong, professor emeritus of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
Part of Wright’s fee for the design work was two Mercedes-Benzes, according to Douglas Steiner, who has written extensively about the architect. Wright also designed a house for Hoffman in Rye, N.Y.
Almost alone, it seems, Mr. Hoffman saw a market for European luxury models in New York and Beverly Hills. Beginning in the late 1940s, he imported a wide range of brands, including Delahaye and Austin.
He was willing to take a chance on the former Third Reich’s people’s car, the Volkswagen, which eventually became a huge hit. He also offered the Jowett Jupiter, which was not.
Hoffman met Ferry Porsche, son of the company’s founder, in 1950 and began importing Porsches to New York. He often raced cars himself to publicize the brands. Hoffman was known for coming up with ideas for new models that would sell well in the United States, suggesting the series production of the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and the Porsche Speedster to their respective manufacturers.
In 1958, Mercedes-Benz bought out Hoffman and remained in the Park Avenue space, through two renovations, until decamping last year for a larger showroom in a new dealership on Eleventh Avenue.
To students of Wright’s work, the showroom ramps recall larger designs. One was the never-built Gordon Strong Automobile Objective, a mountaintop tower imagined in 1924 for a wealthy client. It was to be a structure where cars would park at the culmination of a scenic drive in Maryland. The other is the Guggenheim Museum, which resembles the Automobile Objective tower flipped on its head.
Janet Halstead, executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, a Chicago-based group dedicated to preserving Wright’s work, said that after learning of the planned demolition last June from one of its members, her organization tried to have the city designate the showroom as a landmark.
“We have a network of members and professionals who informally monitor Wright buildings in their regions and in the media, and we often learn about situations through these ‘Wright watch’ participants,” she said. “They constitute a kind of early-warning system for risks to Wright buildings. We sent a formal request for evaluation to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in August 2012.”
According to Matt Chaban of Crain’s New York Business, who reported on the events, on March 22 the commission called, and on March 25 sent a letter, informing the building owner that landmarking was under discussion.
On March 28, the owner applied to the city Buildings Department, a separate agency, for a demolition permit, which was granted. Demolition took place the next week.
“The Landmarks Commission was unaware that the space had been demolished until we had an eyewitness report that the space had been gutted,” Ms. Halstead said.
Calls and e-mails to the owners, Midwood Investment and Management and Oestreicher Properties, and to the building’s managers, were not returned.
The conservancy’s president, Larry Woodin, issued a statement reading in part, “It is very disappointing that the City of New York was not able to move quickly enough to prevent the demolition of this Wright space.”
Donna Boland, a spokeswoman for Mercedes-Benz, said the hope when Mercedes left was that the showroom would be leased to another car company. “We were shocked at the removal,” she said, “but had no say in it since we leased the space.”

La inversión de $691 millones de dólares será destinada a los siguientes proyectos de manufactura de General Motors:
-       $349 mdd serán invertidos en Complejo Silao, para construir una nueva planta donde se desarrollará una nueva generación de transmisiones de 8 velocidades, con mejor desempeño y rendimiento de combustible.
-       $131 mdd se invertirán en Complejo San Luis Potosí, para la expansión de la Planta de Transmisiones donde se realizará la producción de una transmisión de nueva generación, con tecnología de punta, que ofrecerá alto rendimiento de combustible, suavidad de marcha y peso reducido.
-       $211 mdd de inversión totalmente nueva, serán destinados para la expansión de las operaciones de General Motors en el Complejo de Toluca

Del total de esta inversión de $691 millones de dólares, $480 mdd (la suma de los proyectos de los Complejos en Silao y San Luis Potosí), permiten dar cumplimiento total a los $900 mdd anunciados por General Motors de México en julio de 2011, tomando en cuenta que en julio de 2012, General Motors anunció $420 mdd para proyectos en los Complejos de San Luis Potosí y Silao.

Los $211 mdd restantes de este anuncio, que completan los $691 millones de dólares, son una inversión adicional a la cifra mencionada anteriormente para las operaciones de la armadora en el país, acción que demuestra el compromiso por mantener una presencia sólida en nuestro país.

YOKOHAMA, Japón (26 de junio de 2013) – Los accionistas Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. confirmaron su apoyo, casi de manera unánime a Carlos Ghosn, Presidente y CEO de Nissan y al consejo de administración, votando para reelegirlos por un periodo de dos años más.

La 114ª Junta Directiva Ordinaria de Accionistas, que fue celebrada en el Salón Nacional de Convenciones de Yokohama,  tuvo una participación de 1,379 accionistas.

Carlos Ghosn, Presidente y CEO de Nissan, y Toshiyuki Shiga, COO, presentaron los resultados que la compañía alcanzó durante el año fiscal 2012 y las perspectivas para el año corriente a los accionistas. El año fiscal 2012 terminó el 31 de marzo de 2013.

Tres temas fueron presentados a los accionistas para su aprobación incluyendo el informe de los resultados económicos correspondientes al pasado ejercicio fiscal (de abril de 2012 a marzo de 2013), así como la elección de nueve miembros del consejo de administración, a los que expiraba su contrato y la garantía de apreciación de los derechos sobre las acciones.

Ghosn presentó a los accionistas una imagen de este nuevo año fiscal. El directivo dijo que la industria automotriz global deberá vender 81 millones de vehículos durante el año fiscal de Nissan (abril 2013 – marzo 2014), un incremento de tres por ciento sobre el año fiscal anterior. Además reiteró el objetivo de la compañía de vender un récord de 5.3 millones de nuevos vehículos durante este nuevo año fiscal, un incremento de 7.8% respecto del año anterior, con lo que Nissan alcanzaría una participación de mercado mundial de 6.5 por ciento.

Ghosn también afirmó a los accionistas que el pronóstico financiero refleja las expectativas de crecimiento de la compañía para este año fiscal. La compañía prevé un ingreso neto de USD$4,420 millones de dólares para este nuevo año fiscal, y por lo tanto anticipó un dividendo de 30 yenes japoneses por acción para el año fiscal 2013.

Herndon, VA -  Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VWGoA) today celebrated the grand opening of a $40 million Southeast Regional Distribution Center (SERDC) in Roane County, Tenn. The 459,000-plus square-foot facility will be used for distributing domestic auto parts to global markets for the Chattanooga-made Passat. 

Addressing the need for increased infrastructure, the Regional Distribution Center facility will begin as a redistribution center to service warehouses and will later expand to include a parts distribution center. The redistribution Master Depot will support the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Germany. The parts distribution operation will help improve service parts order delivery times to over 110 dealers in the surrounding regions. 

“This new facility serves as tangible proof of the clear commitment that Volkswagen Group of America has to meeting the needs of our dealers and our growing customer base,” said Anu Goel, Vice President of Parts and Vehicle Logistics, Volkswagen Group of America. “Our continued investment in the U.S. market affirms that Volkswagen Group of America is dedicated to the communities in which we do business.”

Highlighting its commitment to the North American market, Volkswagen Group plans to invest more than $5 billion in North America over the next three years in new products, technologies and infrastructure aimed at helping the company reach its long-term goals for the region.

The Southeast Regional Distribution Center marks Volkswagen’s fifth building in the United States to achieve LEED certification and the first among Volkswagen’s warehouses. The others include Volkswagen’s Headquarters in Herndon, Va.; the Volkswagen Chattanooga Manufacturing Factory in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Volkswagen’s Electronic Research Lab (ERL) in Belmont, Calif.; and Volkswagen’s Test Center California (TCC) in Oxnard, Calif.

As part of the grand opening celebration, Volkswagen Group of America announced a $2,500 donation to the Roane County Alliance’s Education Matters! initiative, which supports local students and promotes opportunities for post-secondary education.

Motor racing is hard-coded in Citroën’s DNA, but it comes in many shapes and sizes. After dominating several road-based events around the world for over twenty years, the Brand is now set to turn its attention to track racing, entering the FIA World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCC) from 2014
onwards. Citroën Racing will be taking part in the entire 2014 FIA WTCC season. Obviously, the name of the first driver is already familiar: after winning nine World Rally Championship Drivers’ titles4 in a Xsara, C4 and DS3 WRC, Sébastien Loeb has made no secret of his enthusiasm about tackling this challenge with his favourite team: “First of all, I am pleased that this has been confirmed. It’s a bit of a dream to think that we are going to write a new chapter in our history. I can’t wait to get out on track in the car and start testing. I have used this transitional year to try out various experiences and to improve my track driving skills. I don’t expect to win straight away, but I am determined to get there one day.”

Expedition to Epicness!The 'Awesome' Tata Nano celebrates a World Record for the longest journey in a single country
Tata Motors today celebrated not one but two iconic Nano expeditions. Mr. Ranjit Yadav, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors and India's first Formula One motor racing driver, Mr. Narain Karthikeyan today felicitated Mr. Srikarunya Subrahmanyam, a Bangalore based motoring enthusiast and his team, for entering the Guinness World Records. This significant achievement has been achieved with a national expedition in a Tata Nano.
Mr. Yadav and Mr. Karthikeyan today unveiled the book 'Atop the World' which has been written and edited by Mr. Thomas Chacko. Mr. Chacko is a Kochi-based, 63-year old motoring enthusiast, who completed a 78-day long national expedition in a Tata Nano, covering the length and breadth of the country.
These momentous achievements come from sheer passion for motoring, backed by a robust and reliable car like the Tata Nano.
Speaking on this remarkable achievement, Mr. Ranjit Yadav, President - Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, "The Tata Nano has put India on the world motoring map when it comes to frugal engineering. The car has made us proud yet again with this record. The Tata Nano has proved its robustness and reliability in many car rallies and expeditions undertaken by Tata Motors and by customers on their own. It is motoring enthusiasts like Karun and Thomas who emote true passion for motoring. We are proud to be associated with them and we will continue to encourage such expeditions as it will enable customers to further understand and experience the brand's true value."

Celebrating epicness:
Tata Motors today felicitated Mr. Srikarunya Subrahmanyam and his team for having set the Guinness World Record by accomplishing the longest journey of 10,218 kms, in a Tata Nano, in 10 days, breaking the current record of 8046.74 kms. The team set on an adventure on March 21, 2013 from Kanyakumari to circumnavigate the country and successfully returned victorious on March 30, 2013 in Bangalore.

Celebrating a dream come true: 
Tata Motors today unveiled the book 'Atop the World' written and edited by Mr. Thomas Chacko. The book captures Mr. Chacko's dream project of exploring the country in a Tata Nano. Mr. Chacko successfully completed his 78-day long dream project on July 21, 2012. The 78-day all India drive has tested the Nano across the some of the most rugged terrains of the country and through all kinds of weather. The car emerged successful in this test of endurance.
Felicitating the two motoring enthusiasts, the Ace Racer, Mr. Narain Karthikeyan said, "I lately have seen a new breed of traveller emerge, one who has a streak of adventure and passion for motoring. I have known people who have driven immense distances just for the fun of it, even though a far more painless option of taking a flight or a train was always there. This is exactly the spirit that encourages enthusiasts like Srikarunya and Thomas to overcome challenges that comes with driving long distances especially the sort of mileage that they have done. But all this effort has to be backed up by a reliable package - which is the car and having been involved with the Nano since it existed on a drawing board, I am not surprised that it has managed to achieve this."
